Ever wonder what a naked wedding cake looks like? This is a stack of vanilla buttermilk cakes with a little saran wrap and cardboard protecting each layer as it is prepped for frosting.

I love cupcakes, graphic tees and good-humored sarcasm, so becoming a fan of the Johnny Cupcakes brand was not a huge leap. The product line is based on, well, cupcakes. They are celebrated in a very tongue-in-cheek way and the tee shirts are coveted by a rabid fan base. Not only do I love the soft cotton of the apparel, but I get a good laugh out of the blog antics and photos in the store.
This week we are being graced by the JC suitcase tour which is making a stop at Georgetown cupcakes. Hooray! I can’t promise a CUPCAKE CANON but I am sure there will be fun to be had.
So if you find yourself at 3301 M Street at 8pm on Friday, May 7th— stop into Georgetown Cupcake and score a limited edition tee.
It’s a great american (boston) brand with a fantastic back-story. So check it out and come say hey.

I love brownies. I use a couple of different kinds of chocolate in my standard recipe and it got me thinking (danger!). Why use plain old chocolate chips? Instead, I chopped up some candy melts (from the cake pops) and tossed them into the batter. They created a lovely spring confetti look.

You can use any color to match you mood and really kick up a box mix! Since these pastel colors were so fun, I drizzled a little more melted candy over the top before I cut them up.

After they were stacked I used a few butterflies to add some pizazz since these were “party brownies” for a lovely outdoor picnic.

If I say, “hey, there’s a bug on this cake!” you may not leap for joy. But how could you look into these eyes and think of anything but happiness and fun?!

Lucky Lady
The base of this cake is a 10-inch petal of red velvet. It is iced in cream cheese icing that is tinted green. Fondant leaves drape over the top to provide a nice spot for Ms. Lucky to perch.

A 6-inch round (also red velvet) was covered with a dark chocolate fondant and then given some shiny red wings made with modelling chocolate. What’s a ladybug without her spots? So on they go.

The wings got a light dusting of “pixie dust” for forest shine.
The head is sculpted from dark chocolate fondant (white fondant eyes) with a little wire to hold up the antenaes.

All dressed up with nowhere to go? She needs legs! A few purple and yellow flowers sprinkled around match flowers on the cupcakes. Leaves proclaim that this is Audrey’s special day! What a lucky lady.

When I first started baking I stuck to equipment that was pretty much timeless. Cake pans, spatulas, cookie cutters and icing bags were pretty standard in my grandmother’s kitchen as well as my own. But the deeper I travel down the rabbit hole, the more gadgets and machinery appear to help create sugar magic.
Of your Kitchenaid mixer feels lonely on the counter, perhaps you need to get him a friend– the Cricut Cake. Yup. Provocraft, who make the Cricut paper cutter for scrapbookers have released a version that is foodsafe for fondant and gumpaste. It’s official debuts is today on HSN.
I’ll public ally thank Suzanne for dragging me into the Cricut madness last year. Of course, I immediately “altered” my regular Cricut from a paper cutter to a cake tool, for better or for worse. Methods and discussions have popped up on the internet regarding the pros and cons. But this one is official, food-”safer”, and shiny red.

These animals were made using the Animal Kingdom cartridge
After playing with the CC at the cake show, I decided to upgrade and I am psyched to report that I won a free Cricut Cake at a launch event! So I will give a full report when it arrives on May 15th.
If any of you are considering a purchase, this is not a bad day to do it because HSN is bundling a bunch of accessories with it and offering a flex-pay option. Come on, join the madness!
