A toast to Cupcake Camp DC!

Thanks to all of you who came out to support Cupcake Camp DC 2010! Nicole, who organized this year’s event did an amazing job recruiting bakers, enthusiastic judges and volunteers, a great venue and a fantastic crowd of tasters with their eye on the prize: to eat DC’s best cupcakes!

The event gathered at Funxion (downtown near metro center = sweet!). This brave soul was one of the volunteers who descended fromthe judges platform, announced the next tasty morsel, and delved into the swarm of willing participants. Tray after tray of deliciousness.

Chocolate ganache, strawberry, margarita, bourbon, s’mores, ginger cream, peaches and cream, pineapple, funfetti, and an array of other flavors.

You can see from the gallery below that there were aficionados of all ages. My contribution was for a slightly older crowd (sorry, baby Joy!) who enjoy a glass of red wine with their cupcakes. A swirl of goat cheese frosting, some toasted pine nuts, and a bit of modelling chocolate for flair. Viola! A toast to DC Happy Hour Culture and what I hope will be the first of many Cupcake Camp DC events!

Baby needs a new pair of shoes

Talk about sweet! Little pink booties and a soft fleece blanket top this “pink velvet” cake.

I never get tired of making these little booties because there are an unlimited number of patterns, colors, and elements of cuteness. Love it.

DC Cupcake Camp this Saturday!

This Saturday is the first official DC Cupcake Camp. Cupcake Camp is a national network of cupcake parties and I am thrilled to DC added to the mix! We even merited a fabulous poster designed by CakeSpy. Hooray!

Wish me luck, because I am competeing as a baker.  (See, really! I have a profile and everything.)

Apparently tickets sold out in the first day and they have already maxed out the waiting list,  so I look forward to seeing 200 or so of you at Funxion on Saturday.

NYC in Three Dishes

Every September I head to NYC with the family for the US Open. There is lots to eat in New York and a visit is sure to be a blizzard of fresh fish, juicy steaks, pizza slices, pretzel carts, and Italian pastries. But this weekend went a little differently. Here is my New York in three dishes.

Dish 1: The Big Apple

crumbs-2

Here is the city that launched the cupcake crazy. Magnolia, Billy’s, Sugar Sweet Sunshine (my favorite), and a long list of others satiate the need for a sugar rush. At Crumbs I found a Big Apple Special that embodies New York. It’s larger than your average cupcake, candy apple red, glittery with light and life, stylishly accessorized, and contains a dark alluring center (chocolate fudge filling!).

Dish 2: Gelato

Eataly is the new project of the Bastianich - Batali powerhouse. It replicates the grand Eataly marketplace in Turin right here in flatiron. It just opened on Tuesday, but my mom and I braved the line to get a sneak peak inside.

The market features carefully sourced meat, cheeses, wine, artisan breads, and confections. While scouting my mother spotted a familiar ponytail… Mario!

eataly2

He directed us to the gelato bar, and who could argue? Flavors included the classics with vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, etc. but also seasonal varieties like fig, pear and vanilla, pistachio and strawberry.

So here is dish two: Apricot with amaretti cookies and chocolate hazelnut.

No website yet. I’ll let you google on your own now that the press has been turned loose.

Dish 3: The Big Dog

Every sporting event has arena-friendly food. However, the giant ”Master Chef” sign in the food court signaled that something new was happening.

The cafe menu featured baskets from Carmen Gonzales (lobster roll, pulled pork sandwich, BBQ pork quesadilla), Jonathan Waxman (roast chicken panini, hanger steak panini, caprese sandwhich), Susan Feniger (carne asada tacos, yucatan pork tacos), and Rick Moonen (shrimp hot dog with asian slaw).

What’s more American than John Isner’s rally cap?

isner

Well, nothing. For the sake of argument, let’s say “hot dogs!” So here is dish three, the Moon’N'Doggie Shrimp Hotdog.

It was actually fantastic. Really. I would definitely order it again. You can ready more about the Master Chefs here. And the shrimp dog here.

Eat well my friends.

More demos

Yes, in my last post I promised both dragons and muppets. So here goes.

Who wants a dragon cake? I am dying to make one of these cuties. Creative genius here? Sugar artist Kelly Lance used grape leaf and flower cutters to make the shape of the little guy’s wings and scales. No special equipment needed. Cool.

dragon

While he is holding tight to that candy, he was relieved of most of by the end of the week. Contrary to popular belief by my friends, a cake convention does not involve hours of sitting around eatting cake. I don’t think I even saw any for eatting on site…. so candy is still a hot commodity in the conference center.

I adore satire, so Lauren Kitchen’s demo on characterization was a ton of fun. She poked fun at a few of the other decorators (who you may recognize from thier gold-medal Food Network challenges (see the medals on the cakes?).  There was even puppet trivia with prizes. Score.

characature

In fact, it was so well received that THIS happened.

cakeratzzi

I will call it the “cake-eratzzi”. The room rushed forward for photos in a display of enthusiasm I haven’t witnessed before. LOL!

Part of the fun is drawing inspiration from one another, seeing different methods of construction, and being inspired to try something new and different.
