Under the Tree

It’s funny how some traditional holiday foods are more popular in theory than in practice. For example: fruitcake, eggnog, and anything labelled “salad” that actually contains jell-o.

However, Christmas is a season of redemption! I hold out hope against hope!

Enter Becky Rink’s cookbook: Top Shelf Baker: Sweet Treats from a Well-Stocked Bar and we get an amazing take on egg nog that flies off of the holiday buffet. The cake is spiked with Christmas nog, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and bourbon. (I threw in a splash of Red Stag cherry Whiskey for good measure.) To up the awesome, Becky prescribes a filling made of egg nog pudding and a shot of bourbon glaze on top. Yes, consider egg nog redeemed!

Next year… we’ll tackle jello-o salad.

Let it Snow - Let it Snow - Let it Snow

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Outside it certainly feels like it as the temperature plummets into the 20’s.  Lucky for me, it is toasty and warm in front of the oven where I have been churning out cupcakes, cakes, and wintry treats.

Most requested this year? Red velvet. I’m happy to oblige with a colorful spin on snowflakes to top the billows of cream cheese frosting.

Kick it up a notch

From the outside, this looks like a very nice, quiet, dainty little treat with a few flowers, and a spot for a few candles. But looks can be deceiving. Inside this baby is:

Irish Cream Whiskey, Butterscotch Schnapps, Amaretto Liqueur, and a bit of Vodka. Just for kicks. I’d give you the name of the shot it is based on, but this is a family blog. ;)

Now that’s how you kick a decade up a notch.

Happy Birthday Anita!
