NCACS 2010- Cake Room (Part 1)

What an amazing weekend of cake-making, cake-viewing, and even cake-eating! The NCACS was a huge success and I had even more fun than last year. I have a few hundred pictures to share, so I will do so over a series of posts. Now I head back to the kitchen with a head full of fresh inspiration.

One of our new initiatives this year was “Cake Tours.” I had so much fun walking people through the TWO cake rooms that I thought I would walk you all through a handful of techniques and fun styles. These are cakes from across the different skill levels and categories. A full set of photos will eventually be available on www.cakeshow.org.

The special theme for 2010 was “nursery rhymes” and this working clock calls out to both Hickory Dickory Dock and Hey Diddle Diddle.  To the left you can see the four and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie.

These little monkeys jumping on the bed are awesome. I love that they are reading a copy of Jumping 101. In the bottom left corner (as well as next tot he pie above) you can see snapshots of the cake before it was covered in fondant. This is required for any sculpted pieces to show that they can actually be made out of cake.

You know what else if fun? Counting! You can count this pirate treasure made isomalt jewels (a special kind of sugar) and chocolate coins. These coins are not the little foil-wrapped kind! They are individually molded and painted an edible gold. The tricks here are in the details.

Do you need some counting practice? Try a few rounds of animal hopscotch.

And those were not the only animals on the loose. These guys escaped from Madegascar. An armature of some kind is wrapped with fondant and/or chocolate to provide a stable tree for this cake plane.

Great details on these critters.

And they weren’t the only plane crash to make an appearance. On this cake many of the scenes were hand painted onto the cake with gel food coloring.

Cupcakes or Basketball?

The weather is getting warmer, ushering in cupcake season. To prepare, the Washingtonian has launched The Cupcake Cup . It is a bracket-style showdown between cupcakeries in the DC area. Check it out.

Today’s battle is CakeLove vs. Bakeshop (in Clarendon) and you can vote here.

So while you pour over your March Madness bracket, add a cupcake bracket to the pile and see how you do.

Happy Birthday Erin!

Today I would like to send a special happy birthday wish to the Honeybee Bakeshop Webmaster Extraordinaire, Erin! She seriously keeps this place running and prevents me from crashing it out too frequently with my “creative computing”. Plus she is an amazing friend!

Of course I take advantage of that friendship by forcing trial cake flavors on people at their parties. This concoction is champagne sponge cake, in honor of Champagne Thursdays. (Yeah, yeah, its Wednesday… but champagne is never wrong.)

So, Erin, here is a toast of thanks and a wish for another fantastic year. I hope you are enjoying another lovely birthday celebration. :)

National Capitol Area Cake Show (Revisiting 2009)

Last March I attended my first cake show and I had so much fun that I am counting down the days until this year’s sugarfest on March 2oth and 21st. For two days the National Capitol Area Cake Show will draw amateur and professional sugar artists from across the mid-atlantic to compete in live television-style challenges, display cakes for scoring in special occasion and wedding categories take classes, and share skills and trends in cake art.

This year’s cake show will be March 20th and 21st at Woodson High School in Fairfax, VA.

The show rund Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday from 9-5. All of the activities, including free demos, challenges, and events are listed on the official website.

Last year I submitted my first display cake.
It was a beach theme (obviously, I hope!) with fish swimming among the seaweed, breaking waves, and a tranquil beach scene with cute little flip flops on top.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but people really brought thier A-game. It was weird to think about being critiqued and judged for something meant to be enjoyed and eatten for the sake of a sugar high. But the actual experience was really enjoyable because it was great motivation to learn new skills, refine some basic skills, and have a really great excuse to create something.
However, the best part was seeing everyone’s best work and appreciating the awesome designs that people brought. You can see a lot of photos from previous shows at the NCACS website.
So here we throw out the old and bring in the new. What’s on tap for 2010 you ask? Well, you are going to have to come out to the show to find out!
ps- When you stop by the show be sure and take a “cake tour” to learn about the different methods and techniques in the cake room.

Champagne Bubbles Wedding Cake

I love it when couples take an idea and make it their own. This lovely bride and groom was drawn to the bubbly energy of a white on white cake. To personalize the design we recreated the design in buttercream and topped it with gorgeous fresh hydrangeas.

A touch of silver luster on the bubbles give it a kick of light for the reception.

This couple also caught my attention because the groom asked to have a coordinating cake made for his sister, who was celebrating her birthday on the day of the wedding. I’ve heard of the “Groom’s Cake”, but this was the first “Sister-of-the-Groom’s”  cake that I have ever made. :-)
